PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT

Parents or other volunteers are most welcome and encouraged to participate in school activities.

Many of our programs e.g. P.M.P., Library, Reading, Writing, Maths and excursions rely on the assistance of parents.

We ask all volunteers to attend a Volunteers Information session. These are conducted at different times during the year. Sessions can be organised by contacting the Principal.

View the Volunteer Awareness presentation for more details about what is expected of volunteers.

CLASS PARENTS

Theme: CARE, CONTACT AND COMMUNICATION

AIMS:

  1. Be a communication point re social events at school - personally invite parents to come to events, especially those concerned about not knowing anyone

  2. Encourage a friendly atmosphere - help all parents to feel comfortable and part of the school by communications and social interaction (taking special responsibility to welcome new parents/children) to encourage a sense of belonging to the Parish Community.

  3. Assist teachers where necessary ie. if after notice sent out, the teacher requires more help with classroom programs/excursions class parents can then approach parents personally.

  4. Be aware of sickness/special needs within family/classroom - offer and initiate support eg. organising children's lunches or call on School Community for casseroles. Sending a card for special events such as births and bereavement.

  5. Create more enthusiasm for involvement within the school - socially, working bees, classroom involvement where teachers require parental support eg. reading, P.M.P. craft, excursions.

  6. Involvement with school Parents’ Auxiliary, therefore, allowing for feedback to school as a whole.

WORKING BEES

These are held approximately six times per year to maintain and refurbish existing facilities.

Without the involvement of parents in this work the cost of many programs and facilities would be prohibitive.

Over past years we have greatly improved our facilities via the Working Bees.

In addition they provide parents with the opportunity to have a "hands on" role in the development of the school.

All families are expected to attend at least one Working Bee per year.

EXCURSIONS

Selection of Parents Assisting for Excursions:

  • Unless specifically stated, parents not helping on the excursion are requested not to attend.

  • If the number of parent volunteers exceeds the number of helpers required, class teachers will decide who will attend. Every effort will be made to ensure that all volunteers are given the chance to attend an excursion.

Parent Volunteers on Excursions:

  • Are accepting responsibility for the welfare of the school children assigned to them. This has legal implications relating to duty of care.

  • Must conduct themselves in a manner comparable to that expected of teachers.

  • Should be aware of and understand the purpose and nature of the excursion.

  • Must treat all children fairly.

  • Must refrain from buying sweets or any other items for their own child or their group.

  • Must not bring pre-school children on the excursion.

  • Must refer any concerns to the teacher in charge.

  • Must have attended a Volunteer Information session.
